it is typical to pay for medical bills in foreign countries, because hospitals or medicals do not have contracts with the foreign insurance companies. The only possibility to avoid this, is a confirmation of the insurance company, that they will pay for the costs before starting the medical treatment, which is not always possible after accidents or in case of emergency.

I had to pay out 0f pocket for the ER services and the ambulance ride.... Language barriers prevented me from having the ER call the climbing club before taking care of me....
